Japan and the media
In no way do I want to downplay the tragedy that has struck Japan, and continues to unfold. Nevertheless, my friend in Sendai seems decidedly non-plussed about the conditions, and my high-energy particle physicist relative is non-plussed about the nuclear risks.

The line from my Japanese speaking Nipponophile wife is that those Japanese who don't follow English news are more concerned about potential Typhoid and Cholera outbreaks in the devastated areas - ie real people at real risk of dying.
Those who do read a lot of English appear to be sharing the general Western nuclear hysteria which will no doubt be replaced seamlessly and without comment by the next thing to get anxious about in a fortnight once the reactor iodine has decayed sufficiently.
Which does at least show once again that effective scaremongering can cross cultural boundaries.
And that the Western political control mechanism is to keep people in a constant state of fear.
